Artist Contact Checklist | Stay Visible, Stay Reachable

Being easily contactable is essential for artists who want to grow their careers. Curators, gallerists, collectors, and collaborators often reach out with limited time and will move on quickly if they can’t connect. Outdated emails, broken contact forms, or unmonitored social media can mean missed exhibitions, sales, or partnerships. Keeping your contact info clear, current, and functional ensures you’re always open to new opportunities—and that your work gets seen, supported, and shared.

Keep Your Email Updated

  • Use a professional email address (e.g., yourname.art@gmail.com or studio@yourdomain.com).
  • Check for bounce-backs:
If others report that your emails bounce or go undelivered, your inbox may be:
    • Deactivated or full
    • Using an outdated or mistyped domain (e.g., @gmial.com instead of @gmail.com)
    • On a domain that has expired (e.g., info@yourwebsite.com when your domain has lapsed)

Test your contact: Ask a friend or colleague to email you and confirm it works.

Fix Broken Contact Forms

  • If you use a website contact form:
    • Test it yourself every few months.
    • Confirm submissions actually arrive in your inbox.
    • Ensure confirmation messages are visible to the sender.
    • Avoid CAPTCHA setups that are overly strict.

Better yet: List a direct email address alongside the form for backup. Remember that if you want to avoid spam, you can use either functionality built into your website OR you can put in some words or control characters into your email address: example email *at* address dot com

List All Communication Channels Clearly

Curators or gallerists may want to reach you through multiple ways. Include:

  • Email (primary method)
  • Social media (Instagram DMs, etc.)
  • Phone (optional, but appreciated by professionals)
  • Studio address or location (if public or relevant)

Place these details:

  • In your Instagram bio (or “Email” button)
  • In your website footer and contact page
  • On business cards and press releases

Monitor DMs and Message Requests

  • Instagram and Facebook often filter unknown messages.
  • Check your “Requests” or “Hidden Requests” weekly.
  • If you’re active on multiple platforms, use a social media inbox manager or turn on push notifications.

Update Contact Info Across Platforms

Make sure the same email and details appear:

  • On your website
  • On social media bios
  • On online portfolios or galleries (e.g., Artsy, Saatchi Art)
  • On old blog posts, interviews, or press mentions if possible

Remove or Fix Outdated Info

  • Delete or fix old emails that no longer work.
  • Update redirects if you’ve changed domains or usernames.
  • Leave a “new email” note in old accounts or autoresponders.

Use a Custom Domain (Optional but Pro)

Having an email like hello@yourname.com looks polished and is easier to remember.

Just make sure your domain registration and hosting are current!

Final Tip:

Review your contactability every 6 months — it takes 10 minutes and could mean the difference between missing and landing your next opportunity.
