We look forward to welcoming you at the following events next week – the last in the VAI Lifelong Learning programme for 2022.
Tuesday 29 November: 11am (Webinar) 1-5pm (Clinics) Online
Glasgow School of Art’s John Thorne returns to deliver The Ethical Artist – Creating Challenging, Meaningful Work in a Changing World. This webinar will highlight best practice considerations and techniques for visual artists who wish to reduce their environmental impacts, use materials with more awareness, and create art that challenges our ecological and societal perspective. Emerging and mid-level visual artists will gain key insights on the on the use of materials, of exhibiting work, travel, the power of art to emotionally connect us, and our proportional responsibility.
Supported by Kilkenny County Council Arts Office, the webinar is followed by 8 twenty minute 1-2-1 sessions with John Thorne free for Kilkenny Based visual artists. John Thorne has been Glasgow School of Art’s Sustainability Coordinator since 2013: Working with designers, architects and artists his work seeks to broaden and deepen student experience, exploring how practice can connect us to ourselves and each other and promote social justice.

Wednesday 30 November: 3pm Online
Visual Artists Ireland, in partnership with Galway County Council, Galway City Council and Galway Culture Company invite Galway based visual artists to take part in a Galway online needs analysis that will map the strengths, weaknesses, gaps, cultural infrastructure and opportunities for visual artists in Galway.
We’d encourage as many Galway based visual artists as possible to complete a pre-event survey. A summary of the feedback from the survey will be presented on the 30th November as part of the café. Please join us for the event and to contribute your voice to help further develop the visual arts ecology of Galway and your practice.
Admission is specifically for visual artists based in Galway and is free. If you are a Galway based visual artist and would like to contribute but cannot make the session on the 30th November, please register (non-attending ticket) to receive the needs analysis survey. The survey link is sent to everyone who registers.
We will use the feedback from the survey and online café to design a free programme of professional development supports for Galway visual artists in 2023 (February to June). Artists who attend the visual artists cafe will be offered priority booking for this programme. To book click here.
Thursday 1 December : 11am Online
Curator Talk: Demystifying the role of the Curator. Particularly suitable for emerging curators and artists but open to all, in this curator talk Kate Strain will draw from her own experiences and take a closer look into the role of the curator; research interests, how to connect, collaborate and programme through your work and your practice.
After the talk there will be a Q&A session where Kate will answer open questions from the online audience. This event is supported by Kilkenny County Council Arts office and is free for County Kilkenny based artists. VAI members €5. To book your place, please click this link.
Friday 2 December: 11am live at Wexford Arts Centre
We are pleased to announce a live Artists Talk event taking place on – Friday 2 December at 11am at Wexford Arts Centre. Artists Talk: Laura Fitzgerald and Emma Roche in conversation with Ruth Carroll.
At the newly refurbished Wexford Arts Centre, artists Laura Fitzgerald (currently exhibiting in the Centre) and Emma Roche (2021 recipient of the EMERGENCE Visual Art Award) join Curator and Director Ruth Carroll in conversation about their work and practice. After the discussion there will be a Q&A session. This event is supported by Wexford County Council Arts office and is free for County Wexford based artists. VAI members €5.
